11-18-09: Standing 6'5", a 23inch brown just doesn't look that big in the hands of Ted!!
7-3-09: Terry, a long time client of mine from LA, landed this nice brown below Bull Shoals Dam on the White River.  Notice the high water in the back ground!
3-17-09: At age 14, Bill is proving to be a really good fly fisher!!  This was just one of several really nice fish that he landed on Dry Run Creek!!
11-11-09:  There's always a shot at a big brown!  This one was landed about ten miles down stream of Bull Shoals Dam on the White River.
"A look back at 2009"
Nov.29
Water Levels:  With both lakes falling closer to the top of there power pools (the White River at 1.7ft. above and the Norfork River at 4.4ft. above) we should start to see lower flows in the near future.  While the Norfork River continues to run 2 units around the clock, the White River flows have aleady dropped from 6-7 units to 3-5 units in the past few days.
Water quality:  Although the White River continues to have a slight stain, it's not bad enough to effect the fishing.  The problems we were having with the dissolved oxygen and water temperatures have improved greatly over the past few weeks.  The D.O. levels and temp. for the White River are averaging 9ppm and 58 degrees and the Norfork River is averging 7ppm and 57 degrees.
Fishing conditions: Other than a few windy days, the fishing has been productive on both rivers.  The streamer fishing has slowed drastically over the past couple of weeks.  Therefore, stick to the nymph rigs.
Hot Flies: San juan Worms(wine, red, orange, pink), egg patterns(pink, peach, orange), Sow bugs, Red Ass, various midge patterns.  There's great fishing to enjoy!

It's spawn season and we have low water!!  That being said, Please be careful and not walk on any of the redds!!
Water Levels: Bull Shoals Lake and Norfork Lake levels are back down into their power pools.  Unless we have another big rain event, the river flows will depend upon the need for electricity.  So, we are finally seeing some of our normal river flows!!  Both dams were shut down  for a couple of days this weekend and are back to running one to two units of water.  There is plenty of wadable water at these levels!
Water Quality:  The D.O. levels are great with both rivers averaging 9 to 10 PPM!  The water clarity in both rivers is also in good shape.
Fishing Conditions: By Arkansas standards, the weather has been brutally cold for the past few days, but the forcast looks great starting thursday with the highs in the 50's to 60's!
Hot flies:  egg patterns(peach, pink, orange), san juan worms(red, natural, pink, orange), pheasant tail and hares ear nymphs along with various midge patterns.
Dec.16
The fishing continues to be very good on the upper end of the White River at this time!!  In terms of numbers and size, it's the best we've seen in recent years!!  The Norfork River, on the other hand, has been hit or miss lately.  Probably due to fishing pressure in the low water conditions.
Water Levels:  Bull Shoals Dam on the White River  has been fluctuating between 1 to 4 units of water for the past couple of weeks.  There continues to be plenty of wadable water, unfortunately at these water levels you'll need a boat to access most of it.  There's been very little generation on the Norfork River for the past few days. So, unless you have a boat, focus on the Norfork River for wadable water.
Water Quality:  Both Rivers are in good shape at this time with the D.O. levels averaging 11 to 12 ppm.  So expect a good fight when you hook up!
Weather conditions:  You can expect the weather to be hit and miss this time of year in the Ozarks. But, this past week has been very pleasant with the high temps. ranging 40 to 60 and this weeks forecast looks the same.
Hot Flies:  Due to spawn season the fish are feeding on egg patterns like crazy!! But, San Juan worms, Pheasant tail nymphs, Hares ear nymphs and midge patterns should produce too!  There's great fishing to enjoy!!

Jan.16
The fishing has been great on the White River and should only get better now that the shad are starting to trickle through the dam!!  With this weeks colder weather, we should start to see a good shad kill in the near future!! Click here for more info. on the shad kill.  Most of the shad that I'm finding are about 2 inches in length, so remember to match the hatch!  Besides floating shad, one good sign is the gulls congregating at the bottom of the dam!  Go to the photo gallery and click one of the pics to get a good look at the size and shape of the shad or see the gulls.
Water level:  The past couple of days Bull Shoals Dam has seen a few periods of dead low water, but overall has been running 1 to 4 units.  The Norfork River has increased generation since last week and has been running 2 units from 4:00AM until midnight.  I expect the water  levels to drop a little on both dams after this cold snap has gone through!
Water Quality:  Both Rivers are in good shape at this time with the D.O. levels averaging 11 to 12 ppm.  So expect a good fight when you hook up!
Weather Coditions:  By Arkansas standards, it's been very cold the past few days, with the highs around 20.  The forecast is calling for the highs to reach the forties by Saturday, so there is a light at the end of the tunnel!!
Hot Flies:  Due to spawn season the fish are feeding on egg patterns like crazy!! But, with the shad coming through I'd start to focus on shad patterns!!
  There's great fishing to enjoy!!
Jan.26
The fishing is fantastic on the White River in terms of numbers and size of the fish!  With the lake temperatures where they are, the shad should be pushed to the bottom.  So I'd expect a decent shad kill once the generation has increased.  The Norfork, on the other hand, is producing good numbers but the size is not as good as the White River at this time.
Water Levels: Both rivers have seen very little generation the past 9 days.  The White has been running 1 to 3 units for a couple of hours in the morning and again in the evening, while the Norfork has been completely shut down most of the time.  This is great for wadable water, but we need to see some increased generation for a good shad kill!!  Rumor has it that the rivers are seeing less generation due to construction on one of the bridges further down stream and we should start to see increased generation by Feb.1st or 2nd.
Water Quality:  Both Rivers are in good shape at this time with the D.O. levels averaging 11 to 12 ppm.  So expect a good fight when you hook up!
Weather Conditions: For the past couple of days the highs have been in the 20's and the forecast doesn't change for the next couple of days, which should get us even closer to a good shad kill!!  The forecast for opening day of the Catch and Release Area (Feb.1st) looks a lot better, with the highs in the 40's!
Hot Flies: Egg patterns continue to work well in peach, pink, red and orange.  Various midge patterns are also producing good numbers of fish in low water.  But, shad patterns will become the fly of choice, once we see some increased generation!!
  There's great fishing to enjoy!!
Feb.3
The Catch and Release Area on the White River  below Bull Shoals Dam opened Sunday.  Due to the crowds, the low water fishing was a bit slow compared to previous years but  the high water fishing was fantastic!!  The fish are keyed in on the small number of shad that are coming through the dam during generation.  (To learn more go to shad kill.)   The fishing is great and should only get better with this increased water flow!!
Water levels: While the Norfork River remains shut down, they began generating 2 to 5 units of water on the White River yesterday at 3pm, which should be ideal for a good shad kill!!
Water Quality:  Both rivers seem to be in good shape at this time.  The C.O.E. has not updated the D.O. levels lately but due to the way the fish are fighting, I'll assume they must be up!!
Weather Conditions:  The forecast is calling for the highs to be around 35 for today and tomorrow and back up around 50 to 60 by this weekend.  These lower temps should also help the shad kill!
Hot Flies:  Egg patterns, small san juan worms and midge patterns are working well during the low water periods but shad patterns are killer on  the high water below Bull Shoals Dam!!
  There's great fishing to enjoy!!

Feb. 13
The number of shad coming through Bull Shoals Dam (on the White River) has increased over the past week and the fishing is great!   The fish are feeding so good, at times you can catch them on surface patterns (similar to hopper fishing)!  (To learn more go to shad kill.)  I've read and heard reports of "decent fishing" on the Norfork River but have focused all my time on the White for the past 10 days!
Water levels:  The White River has been running 3 to 5 units of water for the past four days, which is ideal for the shad kill!  The Norfork River has been running 2 units from 6AM until 9PM.
Water Quality:  Both rivers seem to be in good shape at this time.  The C.O.E. has not updated the D.O. levels lately but due to the way the fish are fighting, I'll assume they must be up!!
Weather Conditions:  The weather following the ice storm has been extremely mild for this time of year, with the highs in the 60's and lows in the 40's and it doesn't look like it's going to change much over the next week!!  I'm just hoping it stays cold enough to keep the shad kill going!!
Hot Flies:  Shad Patterns, Shad Patterns, Shad Patterns!!
There's great fishing to enjoy!!
The good news is that this years shad kill on the White River is proving to be the best we've seen in recent years!!   The bad news is that for a few days the fish had literally gorged them selves, which made for very tough fishing!  With decreased generation on Sunday night, came a decreased number of shad and the bite has been fantastic since!!
While fishing below Bull Shoals Dam today, we landed countless rainbows in the 16 to 19 inch range and managed to boat several nice browns from 17 to 21 inches.  All but three fish were taken on surface  shad patterns.  Fishing these patterns on the surface is always hit and miss.  But when it's working, it's the best fishing on the planet!!!
Water levels:  Last week the White River was running 7 & 8 units.  But has been averaging 3 to 6 units for the past 3 days.  There have been higher flows on the Norfork as well but it has been shut down during the night for the past couple of days.
Water Quality:  Both rivers seem to be in good shape at this time.  The C.O.E. has not updated the D.O. levels lately but due to the way the fish are fighting, I'll assume they must be up!!
Weather conditions:  The forecast is calling for a warm day tomorrow followed by the highs in mid 40's for the remainder of the week and the lows around thirty.
Hot Flies:  Shad Patterns, Shad Patterns, Shad Patterns!!
There's great fishing to enjoy!!

March10
Being on the river for the last 10 days has left me with little time for posting reports.  So lets get to it.  The shad kill on the White River was great last week! But due to a decrease in water generation at Bull Shoals Dam, that began last thursday, it has slowed down a bit.  The fish are still keyed in on the shad but unless we start to see some rain and colder weather, this years shad kill could be in the history books.  The good news is that we are already starting to see some caddis hatches down river.  So get ready to dust off your lighter rods and dry flies because it want be long!!
Water levels:  The White River was shut down this past weekend but has be been running 2-3 units of water for the last couple of days.
Water Quality:  Both rivers seem to be in good shape at this time.  The C.O.E. has not updated the D.O. levels lately but due to the way the fish are fighting, I'll assume they must be up!!
Weather conditions:  The temps have been 70 to 80 but the winds have been brutal for the past 4 or 5 days.   We have a chance for some thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow. So maybe, that will give us some well needed rain for the shad kill.
Water Quality:  Both rivers seem to be in good shape at this time.  The C.O.E. has not updated the D.O. levels lately but due to the way the fish are fighting, I'll assume they must be up!!
Hot Flies:  Shad patterns for the upper White River and egg patterns, caddis nymphs and soft hackles for the Lower White River.
There's great fishing to enjoy!!
March 22
There continues to be a few fish in the upper White River that are keyed in on the shad patterns.  But for the most part, the shad kill season is over.  So on to the next best thing, our dry fly season!!  Click here for more info. on our dry fly fishing We're seeing more caddis hatches now. Especially on the warmer days, when the sun is out.  The fish are starting look toward the surface for the dry flies but we've not had these hatches quite long enough for the fish to be focused strictly on the dries.  I look for this to change in the next week or so.  But as of now the fish are definitely keyed in on the caddis nymphs, soft hackles and emergers.   Due to the rainbow and sucker spawn, we are also having great success with egg patterns!!
Water levels:  Due to both rivers being shut down since Thursday morning, there has been plenty of wadable water!!  These lower flows should also help with our dry fly fishing, since it'll put the flies closer to the fish!
Water Quality:  Both rivers seem to be in good shape at this time.  The C.O.E. has not updated the D.O. levels lately but due to the way the fish are fighting, I'll assume they must be up!!
Weather conditions:  Looks great for the next week with the highs in the mid 60'S and the lows around 45 to 50!!
Hot Flies:  Green butt soft hackles, Red ass kelso soft hackles, pheasant tail soft hackles, egg patterns and almost any type caddis nymphs!!
  There's great fishing to enjoy!!
April 2
At this time we're seeing caddis hatches throughout the White River and the Norfork River.  However, due to the recent rains both rivers are running increased water flows and the fish are feeding on the caddis nymphs, soft hackles and emergers deep in the water column.  Click here for more info. on our dry fly fishing.
Due to the fluctuating higher flows on the White River, you will be running into trashy water down stream that can make it very difficult to manage your fly.  This is not uncommon for the White River and is easy to deal with by just staying away from the lower river until the conditions are better.  The upper 10 miles of the White River are easy to manage at this time and are producing some very good days on the water!
Water Levels: For the past several days the White River has been running 5 to 7 generators, while the Norfork has been running 2 generators.
Water Quality:  Both rivers seem to be in good shape at this time.  The C.O.E. has not updated the D.O. levels lately but due to the way the fish are fighting, I'll assume they must be up!!
Weather Conditions:  We've seen some very windy conditions over the past week but with the exception of this coming Sunday and Monday the seven day forecast looks pretty good, with the highs around 60 to 70 and the lows around 40.
Hot Flies:  Green butt soft hackles, Red ass kelso soft hackles, pheasant tail soft hackles, egg patterns and almost any type caddis nymphs!!  Due to the rainbow and sucker spawn, don't forget your egg patterns!!
  There's great fishing to enjoy!!
April 29
Fly fishing on the upper White River is very good at this time and has been for the past three weeks.  The caddis are still coming off and when the water is clear, the fish are focused on the caddis nymphes and emergers.  Click here for more info. about our dry fly fishing.  The trashy water caused by the early morning increased water flows has improved to the point that it's hardly noticeable!
Over the years we've always expected a few windy days in the Spring season.  However, this Spring seasons wind has proved to be relentless and I'm looking forward to some calm days on the water in May!  I've been on the river all but four days this month and have had only two days that the wind did not effect where we fished.  Therefore reducing our chances of hooking a big brown! The best way to combat the wind is to stay out of it.  Use the landscape as a wind block and you'll have some  productive days on the water.  The high, steep bluffs do a pretty good job of blocking the wind and the upper ten miles of the White River has more bluffs(wind blocks) than any other section.
Water levels: The White River has been running 1 to 4 units around the clock.  These lower flows, along with smaller nymph rigs are making very productive days on the water!  The Norfork River has been running 1 to 2 units in the morning and off from around noon until about 6:00 pm.  There has been plenty of wadable water on the Norfork but fighting the crowds may not be worth the quality of fish that are there!
Water Quality:  Both rivers seem to be in good shape at this time.  The C.O.E. has not updated the D.O. levels lately but due to the way the fish are fighting, I'll assume they must be up!!
Weather Conditions: There's a chance of rain ever day for the next seven days.  The bright side is the winds are only going to be 5 to 10 mph instead of 20 to 30 mph.  So maybe we are starting to say good bye to the Spring winds for the year!!
Hot Flies:  Green butt soft hackles, Red ass kelso soft hackles, pheasant tail soft hackles, almost any type caddis nymphs and san juan worms!!  Due to the rainbow and sucker spawn, don't forget your egg patterns!!
  There's great fishing to enjoy!!
May 5
Fly fishing on the White River continues to be very productive.  We've had several rainy days this past week but the wind has finally died down and made for some very pleasant fishing when  compared to April.  We're still seeing the caddis hatches, especially when the sun is out and the fish continue to feed on the caddis emergers and nymphs.  But on the lower water flows we are able to fish the dries with droppers and do very well.  Also, wading some of the 2 to 4 unit flows has proved to be very productive swinging soft hackle.
Water levels: The White River has been running 1 to 4 units around the clock.  These lower flows, along with smaller nymph rigs are making very productive days on the water!  Finding wadable water on the Norfork has been hit or miss the past week. Even when you find your window of opportunity, fighting the crowds may not be worth the quality of fish that are there!
Water Quality:  Both rivers seem to be in good shape at this time.  The C.O.E. has not updated the D.O. levels lately but due to the way the fish are fighting, I'll assume they must be up!!
Weather Conditions: Looks like rain will be hit and miss this next week but not as likely as last.  Forecast for wind is around 5 to 10 mph, which is a major plus!!
Hot Flies:  Green butt soft hackles, Red ass kelso soft hackles, pheasant tail soft hackles, almost any type caddis nymphs and san juan worms!!  Due to the rainbow and sucker spawn, don't forget your egg patterns!!
  There's great fishing to enjoy!!
May 18
Fly fishing on the White River has been spectacular for the last week or so.  Due to minimal flooding down in the Arkansas delta, the dam was shut down from Tuesday until Friday.  This allowed for plenty of wadable water and the fish are killing soft hackles and emerger.  We're not seeing as many caddis hatches as we were a couple of weeks ago but the fish are still taking the dries from time to time. Since Friday we've only seen a real light one to two unit run of generation, which makes it very easy to fish the lighter rigs from the boat.
Water levels:  Currently the White River is running 1 to 2 units of water.  For the last few days the Norfork River has been running 2 units from around 4 pm to 10 pm.
Water Quality:  The DO on the White River looks good, averaging 10ppm.  The COE is still not reporting the DO on the Norfork River.
Weather Conditions:  This next weeks forecast looks great, with the highs temps ranging from 70 to 80 and the lows around 55 with little wind.
Hot Flies:  Green butt soft hackles, Red ass kelso soft hackles, pheasant tail soft hackles and almost any type caddis nymphs!! Midge patterns are also working very well below Bull Shoals Dam! Due to the rainbow and sucker spawn, don't forget your egg patterns!!
  There's great fishing to enjoy!!
May 27
The fly fishing continues to be good throughout the White River but particularly great at Bull Shoals Dam and Rim Shoals catch and release areas!  We are still seeing some caddis hatches and the mayflies hatches are migrating up river.  I've seen some pretty good mayfly hatches at Rim Shoals this past week and surprisingly even a few mayflies at Bull Shoals Dam in the afternoons.
Water levels:  For the past five days Bull Shoals Dam has been shut down during the night and running 1 to 3 units during the day.  This allows for some wadable water down stream during the day when traveling from access to access.  The Norfork River has been running 1 to 2 units from about 3PM until 10PM.
Water Quality:  The DO on the White River looks good, averaging 10ppm.  The COE is still not reporting the DO on the Norfork River.
Weather Conditions:  This next weeks forecast looks great, with the highs temps ranging from 80 and the lows around 60 with little wind.
June 8
Fly fishing on the White River has been as good as it gets for the last week or so!  Excluding Saturday, we've managed to land fish over eighteen inches every day on the water.  We're seeing some very good mayfly hatches and the fish are keyed in on the emergers when the water is up and taking some of the dries when the water is lower.  I beleave we're not far from our hopper season, due to the fact that we're starting to take a few fish on hoppers! The trashy water down stream has forced me to fish below Bull Shoals Dam almost every single day and it has proved to be very good!  Once we start to see some higher flows, the river should clean up a great deal and we'll be able to fish other sections more productively but as long as Bull Shoals is producing the way it is, I'll probably stay up there!
Water levels: Other than a shut down period of about 5 hrs yesterday morning, the White Rver has been running 1 to 3 units of water around the clock for over a week.  The Norfork River has been running 1 to 2 units of water from around noon until 10pm.
Water Quality:  The DO on the White River looks good, averaging 10ppm.  The COE is still not reporting the DO on the Norfork River.
Weather Conditions:  Other than a slight chance of rain this week, the forecast looks good with highs in the 80's and lows in the 60's
Hot Flies:  mayflies, mayfly emergers, soft hackles and midges below the dam are deadly right now!!
  There's great fishing to enjoy!!
June 27
Fly fishing on the White River continues to be very good at this time!!  For the past few weeks we've been landing good numbers of fish during the morning hours on the upper end of the White River, around the Wildcat Shoals area.  Then by mid day powering up river to the C&R area below Bull Shoals Dam to focus on better quality fish.  The may fly hatches are not quite as thick as they were a week or so ago but we are still seeing some and the fish continue to be keyed in on the may fly emergers.  I've been playing around a little with hoppers and seeing some action but not anything steady as of yet.  However, I do feel that our hopper season is just around the corner!!
Water levels:  The White River continues to run about 2 units over night and cranking up to about 6 units by early afternoon.  The Norfork River has been running 2 units from mid morning and shutting down during the night.
Water Quality:  The DO on the White River looks good, averaging 10ppm.  The COE is still not reporting the DO on the Norfork River.
Weather Condition: You've probably already heard about the heat wave we've been seeing for the past week so I'll skip it!  However, this weeks forecast is calling for the highs to back down around normal for this time of year and about ten degrees cooler than last week!!
Hot Flies:  mayflies, mayfly emergers, soft hackles and midges below the dam are deadly right now!!
  There's great fishing to enjoy!!
July12
Fly fishing on the White River has been very productive for the last few weeks.  We're landing good numbers of fish through out the river and the size of the fish below Bull Shoals Dam, in the Catch & Release area, are as good as it gets!!  We've managed to land fish over eighteen inches on every trip to this area for the last couple of weeks!!
The mayfly hatch is almost nonexistent.  We're only seeing about a dozen or so during the day.  However, at times the fish continue to key in to the mayfly emergers and nymphs.
Water levels:  The White River continues to run 5 to 7 generators from about 7:00am until midnight.  Then cutting back to about 2 generators during the early morning hours.  The Norfork River is running 2 generators from 7:00am until midnight and off during the early morning hours.
Water Quality:  The D.O. levels are looking good at this time, with the White River averaging 8ppm and the Norfork River averaging 7ppm.  Some of the higher flows on the White River may continue to produce some trashy water at time.  The two best ways to avoid the trashy rise is 1) motor up stream into clear water or 2) motor down stream in front of the rise.  Either way, the White River will produce quality fish!!
Weather Condition:  This weeks forecast is calling for the highs to be in the mid 90's and the lows to be in the low 70's.  But, fishing these higher flows of cold water will make the air temps. more tolerable than you might think!
Hot Flies:  The mayfly emergers and nymphs continue to work but are not producing as well as they were a week or so ago.  However, midge patterns and san juan worms are taking a beating!!
  There's great fishing to enjoy!!

Fly fishing on the White River is fantastic at this time!  We continue to land good numbers of fish through out the river and the size of the fish below Bull Shoals Dam, in the Catch & Release area, is as good as it gets!!
The mayfly hatch is almost nonexistent.  We're only seeing about a dozen or so during the day.  However, at times the fish continue to key in to the mayfly emergers and nymphs.
Bull Shoals Dam will see periods of low water next month for trout habitat restoration.  We are already starting to see some surface action with hoppers and I feel that it will only get better during the lower water flows in August!!
Water levels:  The White River continues to run 5 to 7 generators from mid morning until midnight.  Then cutting back to about 2 generators during the early morning hours.  The Norfork River is running 2 generators from mid morning until midnight and off during the early morning hours.
Water Quality:  The D.O. level on the White River is averaging 8ppm at this time.  The C.O.E. is adjusting the dam turbines to improve the D.O. levels on the Norfork.  Some of the higher flows on the White River may continue to produce some trashy water at time.  The two best ways to avoid the trashy rise is 1) motor up stream into clear water or 2) motor down stream in front of the rise.  Either way, the White River will produce quality fish!!

August8
Summer fly fishing on the White River continues to be very good!  Not much has changed since my last report and that's a great thing!  We continue to land good numbers of fish throughout the river and the size of the fish below Bull Shoals Dam, in the Catch & Release area, is as good as it gets!!
It's very late in the year to be seeing much in the way of mayfly hatches, yet we are still seeing some in the Wildcat area during the morning.  During these sporadic hatches, the fish continue to feed on the nymphes and emergers.
The AG&F along with the COE announced last month that they would be doing some trout habbitat improvements below Bull Shoals Dam beginning August 1st.  Therefore, the dam would be running zero generation from 6am until noon.  As of yet, this has not happened and the next scheduled date is August 17th.  We continue to see some surface action with hoppers and it will only get better with lower water flows.
Water levels:  The White River continues to run 5 to 7 generators from mid morning until midnight.  Then cutting back to about 1 generator during the early morning hours.  The Norfork River is running 2 generators from mid morning until midnight and off during the early morning hours.
Water Quality:  The D.O. level on the White River is averaging 7ppm at this time.  The C.O.E. is adjusting the dam turbines to improve the D.O. levels on the Norfork.  However, The D.O. levels continue to drop down around 4.5ppm in heavy generation.  Some of the higher flows on the White River may continue to produce some trashy water at times.  The two best ways to avoid the trashy rise is 1) motor up stream into clear water or 2) motor down stream in front of the rise.  Either way, the White River will produce quality fish!!
Weather Condition:  This weeks forecast is calling for the highs to be around 90 and the lows around 70, with a 20 to 30% chance of rain.
Hot Flies:  The mayfly emergers and nymphs continue to work very well in the Wildcat area and  midge patterns and san juan worms are taking a beating throughout the river!!

Fly fishing on the White River is absolutely wonderful at this time.  With the lake level back to normal pool, we are seeing some low water again and the wade fishing has been great!  The high water that we've seen for the last year and a half has left the river full of fat, healthy fish!!  Being able to wade the shoals and drift fish the pools from a boat is a refreshing change from a year ago.  The fish seem to be turned on to just about anything right now but I would say that the hopper/dropper rig is by far the most fun!!
Water levels:  The White River has been generating only 2units from about 3pm til 7pm for last couple of days.  The Norfork has been generating 1 unit in the same time frame.  So there has been plenty of wadable water for everyone and with these current lake levels, I don't see any changes in the near future!
Water Quality:  The White River DO levels range 6ppm to 10ppm. With the worst during the early morning hours of 3am to 7am it hasn't had an effect on the bite.  The Norfork DO levels are in the 6 to 7ppm range.
Weather Condition:  With the highs in the mid to upper 70's and the lows around 55 to 60, feels like early Fall season already.
Hot Flies:  The fish are feeding really well at this time.  We're seeing great success with midge patterns, soft hackles, san juan worms and hoppers!

Sept.20
Although we've seen rain day after day for the past week, fly fishing on the White River continues to be very good!  The bite has been good on a several different flies but the high light has been hopper patterns!
Water levels:  We've seen more wadable water this week and probably will for a few more days.  Due to the high water down south, they've been holding back on the generation at this time.  The White has only generated one unit for about four hours a day, for the last two days and the Norfork less than that.
Water Quality:  The White River DO levels had been pretty good until yesterday afternoon and have fallen quite a bit since, rangeing anywhere from 2ppm to 7ppm.  The Norfork DO levels where averageing around 4ppm and have increased to 6ppm today.
Weather Condition:  The forecast for the next five days is calling for 30 to 60% chance of rain.  The highs in the mid to upper 70's with the lows around 60.
Hot Flies:  The fish are feeding really well at this time.  We're seeing great success with midge patterns, soft hackles, san juan worms and hoppers!

Oct.13
This report is much the same as the last.  The fly fishing is great and the weather is wet!!  Due to heavy rain amounts, Bull Shoals lake levels have increased over the past few days.  However, the White River flows are a moderate one to two units, which are great levels for fly fishing!!  Due to the high water levels down steam (in the delta farm land), we'll probably not see much of a drastic increase in the White River flows in the real near future.
Water Quality: After recent rains, the White River will probably be muddy down stream for several days.  The upper end will be the place to fish.  The White River D.O. levels are pretty good at this time, running 6.5ppm to 9ppm while the Norfork River D.O. levels have fallen around 4.5ppm to 6ppm.
Weather Condition: The rain should move out  by Friday, with partly cloudy skies this weekend.  High temps. in the mid 50's and lows around 40.
Hot Flies: We're having great success with midge patterns, soft hackles and san juan worms.  But the highlight continues to be surface action with hopper patterns when the conditions are right!!

Oct.28
Although mother nature created several windy and rainy days for us over the last couple of weeks, fly fishing on the White River continues to be very productive!  We're seeing good numbers of quality fish brought to the net.  Due to the brown trout spawning season, the Catch and Release area, below Bull Shoals Dam will be closing Nov.1st and will reopen Feb.1st!   The brown trout have been staging (for the spawn) for several weeks now and I feel sure that there may already be some redds made.  That being said, please be careful and not walk on them, while wade fishing!
Water Quality:  Due to recent rains, expect the White River to be a little off color downstream of Crooked Creek for the next few days. It's that time of year again, when the lakes start to turn over and the D.O. levels drop in our rivers.  Keep in mind that these levels do improve a mile or two down stream of the dams! The White River D.O. levels are somewhat OK at this time, running 6.8ppm to 8.5ppm. The Norfork D.O. levels are not looking as good, running 3.8ppm. to 5.9ppm.
Weather Condition:   Although there is a 70% chance for rain in the next two days, the rest of the seven day forecast looks good.  The highs 55 to 65 and the lows 40 to 45.
Water Levels:  The White River has been running one to three generators around the clock for several weeks, which is absolutely great for fly fishing!!  Generation on the Norfork River has been hit or miss lately. With it being shut down from 11:00am until 5:00pm for the last couple of days, you may find some wadable water on the Norfork but so will everybody else!  So look for the crowds!
Hot Flies: We continue having great success with midge patterns, soft hackles, egg patterns and san juan worms.

Nov.16
Fly Fishing on the White River has been fantastic for the last couple of weeks and looks to get even better!!  The water flows have made it some what easier to fish for the better quality fish and the numbers game has been unreal.  With Bull Shoals Lake level getting higher and this years D.O. levels improving just around the corner, I expect higher flows in the next few weeks. When we get these higher flows, it should make for a wonderful shad kill!!  There hasn't been much pressure on the fish and with these flows, they are growing like crazy!
We're seeing a good number of redds now, so please be careful not to walk on them while wade fishing!!
Water Levels:  The White River has been running 3/4 to 2 units of water around the clock, which is absolutely great for fly fishing! There are a few places to wade fish but most are only accessible by boat. There is rumor that the C.O.E. will increase generation on Dec.1st. The Norfork generation continues to be hit or miss.  While the Norfork Dam generated water around the clock yesterday, it was off this afternoon.
Water Quality:  Other than the D.O. levels, the water quality looks good right now.  The White River D.O. levels are running 6 to 7ppm while the Norfork River D.O. levels are bottoming out around 4ppm.  You'll find better D.O. levels a few miles down stream from either Dams!!
Weather Condition:   We can say good bye to this past weeks warmer than average weather and start getting ready for winter. This weeks forecast is calling for the highs to be 45 to 55 and the lows to be 35 to 45.
Hot Flies: We continue having great success with midge patterns, soft hackles, egg patterns and san juan worms.

Dec.3
Fly fishing on the White River has been outstanding for the past few weeks and should keep improving for the next month or so!  Novembers lower water flows saw a good number of nice fish brought to the net.  December 1st the water flows changed drastically and should prove to be another good month for fly fishing!!
I've read a couple local newspaper articles along with a few fishing reports about the flood gates at Bull Shoals Dam being opened.  It sounds as if people should run for the hills.  But keep in mind that as of today, even with the flood gates open, it is only the equivalent of about seven generators, which is several feet lower than last years high water episode that lasted almost eleven months and fished so well!!  I'm looking forward to this high water fly fishing because the fish are going to grow like crazy and it always keeps the crowds away!  Heck, I may have the river to myself!!
Water Levels:  The White River is currently running the equivalent of 7 to 8 units of water, while the Norfork River is running the equivalent of three.
Water Quality: The White River D.O. levels can't be better!  They were averaging about 7ppm until the flood gates were opened and then rose to 10.8ppm!  However, even with the flood gates open on the Norfork River, the D.O. levels are only running around 6ppm.
Weather Condition:  This weeks forecast is showing the highs to be around 40 and the lows to be around 30.
Hot Flies:  It's no secret!  On higher water flows, egg patterns and san juan worms almost always produce!!!

Dec.17
Fly fishing the high water flows of the White River continues to produce nice fish!  The flood gates are still open and the we continue to see high water, there's been very little fluctuation in the water levels of the White River.  With these steady water flows, holding patterns become more steady for the fish.  We're spending less time looking for fish and more time fishing.  As most already know, the fish will almost always shut down during falling water levels.  So not having to deal with drastic falls in the water level has been a bonus  as well!!  Along with this high water, we are seeing a relatively cold December.  This could turn into the perfect storm for great shad kill this year!!
Water Levels:  The White River is currently running the equivalent of 8 to 9 units of water. With this years low D.O. season at an end, I would expect the C.O.E. to close the flood gates sometime in the near future.  The Norfork River flood gates have already been shut down but they continue to run 2 full generators at this time and I would expect this trend to continue for the next month.
Water Quality: With Bull Shoals Lake continuing to turn over, there is somewhat of a slight stain to the water but it doesn't seem to effect the fishing.  Other than that the water quality of both rivers looks great.  This year low D.O. season seems to be past us now, with the White coasting at 11p.p.m. and the Norfork at about 9p.p.m.!
Weather Condition: This weeks forecast is calling for the highs to be in the mid to low 40's and lows around 25.  The colder night temperatures should help with dropping the surface temps. on the lakes(shad kill).
Hot Flies:  It's no secret!  On higher water flows, egg patterns and san juan worms almost always produce!!!
   There's great fishing to enjoy!!
Dec.18
The flood gates at Bull Shoals Dam on the White River were closed yesterday about 4:00pm.  The D.O. levels looked good with the gates closed, running steady at 8.4ppm.  This is a very good sign that this years low D.O. season has past.  However, at 11:00am this morning the C.O.E. cracked all 17 flood gates(in effort to lower lake levels at a faster rate).  BUT even with all 17 gates open, the water level remains the  equivalent of about eight units.  The fishing should continue to be great with these steady flows!!  Below (Dec.17) is a more detailed high water fishing report!  Check it out!!
Dec.28
Due to last weeks heavy rains and higher water levels farther down stream, water flows have been cut way back on the White River and the Norfork River.  Some parts of mid and southern Arkansas saw as much as 6 to 7 inches of rain.  So I would  expect this trend of lower flows to last for a while.
Water Levels:  The White River is currently running about 2 units of water and the Norfork about one.  There should be plenty of wadable water for those that are familiar with the rivers.
Water Quality:  This years low D.O. season has past and both rivers are in good shape at this time.  The White River D.O. levels are averaging 9-10ppm, while the Norfork River is averaging 11ppm.
Weather Condition:  The weather continues to be very cold for this time of year.  This weeks forecast is calling for the highs to be in the mid 30's and lows around 20.  The colder night temperatures should help with dropping the surface temps. on the lakes, which in-turn should help with the shad kill.
Hot Flies:   As with most winter seasons here in the Ozarks, egg patterns and san juan worms will produce!!
  There's great fishing to enjoy!!
